Disclosure: I received an e-book copy from the author, but this has not affected my review and rating in any way.
What's in the basement? What's behind the dark rhyme, a child kept on chanting? Who's sane and who's not? Is the orphanage really haunted? by restless spirits? by madness? or by the living? Blaire, the main protagonist in the story, although dealing with a lot of stuffs going on with her life, has decided to focus on helping the children while dealing and trying to uncover the mystery behind the weird and creepy events at St. Sebastian. She's a likable character, with her desire to help and improve the children's condition, although you might question her sanity during the first few chapters. The characters were interesting and there's no character I didn't like in the story. My favorite among the “unwanted” was Bodan. One of the scenes that really touched me was when he asked Blaire why he was at the orphanage and thought that he was just a “mistake” and would never even want himself. Bodan's thoughts and feelings towards his fate is not far from reality. It may be the same feeling and thoughts also of some abandoned and neglected children, thrown away in an orphanage or left somewhere. This book left me with some questions though. I'm curious as to what happened to the Frightening Four after the incident in the bridge because there has been no further explanation in the book with what Blaire meant when she said, she hopes that the FF got what they deserved. Also, I wanted to know more about the interesting cursed town, called Black Water. The author said that each book in the series stands alone, so I don't think I will get the answers even I read book 1. Moreover, I noticed a plot hole in the story. The setting was in a remote, Eastern European town but it wasn't explained if how come all the characters understood well each other. The volunteers were Americans, and there has been no language barrier between them and the locals. Maybe the locals know how to speak English? How about the children? Anyway, even with that, I still enjoyed this book. This is a horror novel, intertwined with mysteries surrounding the setting and the characters, which any horror junkie will definitely enjoy. Readers will be kept guessing about what's really happening with the characters and the strange happenings at the orphanage. This is the second book in the Black Water Tales series, but each book stand alone. Read it in the middle of the night or during the wee hours to experience the spine-chilling effect. A highly recommended horror-slash-mystery book!
"Mommy, mommy, take me home, far away from the unknown. Pick me up and fly away into the light of another day. Rescue me from the halls of the haunted, the desperate, the evil, unloved, and unwanted."
